The Process

If you'd like to commission a portrait or have any questions about commissioning one, please get in touch via the contact box below so we can have a chat about your requirements. I am happy to travel for sittings/photo sessions and arrange safe and secure delivery of your artwork nationally and internationally.

My portraits are painted in oil on board and are most commonly between 16 to 26 inches in size, rectangular or square, and come unframed unless specified but I will paint to any specification. Although willing to work from photographs, I always prefer to meet my subjects in the flesh and take my own photos but appreciate that, if you are many miles away or if it's a posthumous commission, this is not always feasible. Portraits take on average a week to complete but please allow for a few days drying time on top of that. Your portrait will be finished in Farrow & Ball Charleston Gray on the back, signed and cello-wrapped.  A 25% deposit is required to book your portrait in with full payment due upon completion.

My current charge for a standard sized, single-subject oil-painting is £395 with 15% surcharge for each additional dog. If you are Suffolk-based or within a 35 mile radius this price includes a home visit/photo shoot.

What makes my portraits different?

Unlike the majority of pet portrait artists, I don't set out to capture a photographic likeness or describe every hair and wrinkle. For me portraiture should be loose and expressive as well as containing some narrative which is why I like to incorporate some background material into the painting, such as an aga, a blanket, a favourite armchair or that rug by the fire, for instance, believing this not only provides some useful context but also opens up the colour palette and makes for a more interesting composition. You may well prefer a traditional composition however, so of course that's an option too. Below are two different portrait styles which might help to guide you.

Type 1 - Classic

Conventional 'head and shoulders' with plain background

Type 2 - Narrative

Customer Care

I will only consider a portrait complete once you have confirmed your approval of it via emailed photograph. After that, every endeavour will be made to deliver the artwork to you securely and safely, if you are unable to collect, either by Royal Mail or courier, depending on what we've agreed.

Dominica, your portrait of our little Megan is positively mesmeric. We can't thank you enough                                                                                                                                    Margaret, Norfolk

Such a lovely lady and an incredibly talented artist. Our second painting has arrived today and looking forward to our portrait of Smokey!                                                                                   Joann, Norfolk

Dominica produced a gorgeous portrait of our dogs.  We're so happy with it. She came out to meet the dogs and understand their characters which really helped to get their likeness. Thank you!                                                                                                                 Louise, Hampshire

Can thoroughly recommend Dominica. It brought a tear to my eye on Christmas Day when I opened up my beautiful painting of Herbie who we lost a few months ago.     Emma, Suffolk

Dominica achieved an amazing likeness of Isla our black Labrador and the painting is a work of art. It looks so beautiful on our wall.   Bella, Devon
